I’ll admit that this is the first I’ve ever heard of Profligate but from what I had heard on preview track Enlist and now experiencing the sounds and atmosphere of Somewhere Else, I’m going to delve deep into the back catalog and check out the previous offerings.

I would state that if you are of a nervous disposition and/or not a fan of harsh loud noises, this album is definitely not for you. Somewhere Else is dark and brooding in a way that even Trent Reznor hasn’t hit on a NIN record let alone any of his sound projects or soundtrack work.

Whilst we are comparing the music on display on this record it would be wrong of me not to mention that there is a little bit of Tricky in the vocal delivery, in that it is for the most part quiet and spoken and on A Circle Of, we have the mumbled male vocal with a clearer female voice that Tricky does so well.

The sound of the album seems to be in a weird space of 80’s electronic and industrial with a splash of Trip Hop and all the toppings of afforded by modern technology, but this is in no way a bad thing as it makes the album more unique than the current trend of the 80’s pop sound revival that is expertly done by the likes of The Midnight for example.

All in all this is a somewhat interesting and unique listen, that keeps you engaged with its dark melodies and the interest of where the record will go next, some of the sounds are brass and harsh but without that element the songs would fall flat and not convey the message or feeling in the song. The only downside is some of the tracks on Somewhere Else could do with a bit of an edit but at 39 minutes it’s not that big of an issue.

RATING: 7/10
