When I find or indeed sent an artist/band that are stated as indie-folk, I’m always cautious of clicking the link to listen, why, because when it reads “indie-folk” it normally means we are trying to be Mumford & Sons mixed with The Lumineers. Thankfully the new single, Storm, by Norwegian/Welsh Indie-folk duo Firewoodisland is not that.
Storm is a beautiful serene picture painting track that does folk music justice and doesn’t follow the trend of the modern “folk” sound, having more in common with Bon Iver, Of Monsters and Men and Oh Wonder than more of the traditional folk sound.
‘Storm’ is a piano led piece of music that soothes the soul like a warm blanket on a cold day and evokes imagery of a forest setting with snowcapped mountains as a backdrop, yes it truly is as stunning as it sounds.
On the inspiration behind their new single, Firewoodisland explains, “The idea for ‘Storm’ and most of the song shot down like lightning in the autumn of 2018. The weather was behaving really strangely and our neighbourhood ended up being the centre of a storm. This ironically mirrored our personal lives in a stressful and chaotic season. ‘Storm’ is about being able to accept and abide in the turbulent circumstances that you’re in, and not to be consumed by them.”
